Polls open in Richmond Park for by-election

by 1st December 2016 0 comments

POLLS have opened across Richmond and Kingston today for a by-election in the Richmond Park constituency.

The contest was triggered by the resignation of the former Conservative MP Zac Goldsmith, over Heathrow expansion.

There are eight candidates standing, including Mr Goldsmith who is standing as an Independent candidate, with polls opening at 7am this morning and closing at 10pm.

41 polling stations will be open, staffed by over 100 people, with further staff  working at the count later on at Richmond upon Thames College.

The first ballot boxes will start arriving at the college shortly after the polls close, with a result expected in the early hours of Friday morning.

The acting returning officer is Mark Maidment.

In 2015, Mr Goldsmith, who stood for the Conservatives, won with a majority of more than 20,000.

In the EU Referendum in June, Richmond Park overwhelmingly backed Remain.
